| dcterms.description | In this episode we dive into the topic of Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC). In short FPIC is a requirement to ensure, that indigenous peoples are not only informed about management on their lands but also consent to that management prior to it being conducted. The concept of FPIC isn’t new. It is one of the fundamental human rights. However, it all too often isn’t implemented or implemented properly. And as a result, aboriginal peoples all over the world become marginalized in the management of their territories. This is despite the fact, that Indigenous Peoples own the rights to more than 25% of the global forest area. And that these areas are the most value areas from a biodiversity perspective, with more than 80% of the Worlds biodiversity within their lands. FSC in Canada seems to have been able to solve some of the really hard challenges of Free, Prior and Informed Consent. They did this through dedicated work with both the forest management industry and with the representatives of the indigenous communities. In this episode we take a closer look at what they have done and how we might use their learnings in other parts of the World. To help me learn much more about this topic, I have asked Pamela Perreault and Francois Dufresne to join me online. Pamela is part of the Garden River First Nation in Ontario, Canada. And she helped FSC find solutions for FPIC in both Canada and globally in her role as a technical writer of guidance documents. Francois is the President of FSC Canada and a long-term advocate for the need for better solutions for inclusion of Indigenous Peoples in FSC. | en |
