is.evaluation.notes | The authors examine the suitability of the FSC governance mechanisms as a possibility for the Ecosystem Approach (EA) as they share broader aims. It is the goal of this analysis to deliver a decision-making mechanism for the EA that is developed out of the experiences of the FSC system so that the same faults can be avoided. An important difference found in the analysis, that limits this suitability, is the concentration of FSC on market machanism and with this the influence of economic actors. There are some, though rather objective, criticial notes on shortcomings and limitations of the FSC system in the article.
is.evaluation.quotes | The certification scheme of the Forest StewardshipCouncil (FSC) and the Ecosystem Approach (EA)as conceptualised under the Convention on BiologicalDiversity show substantial convergence in their broaderaims and normative background. Taking this finding as astarting point, the paper discusses what lessons could belearned from FSC's experience in developing and implementingspecific norms and standards.
is.evaluation.quotes | the FSC architecture can serve as an inspiration, if not as a blueprint how general principles of global scope can be operationalised and transformed into regional and local level standards while maintaining a high level of conformity with their original spirit and intent.
is.evaluation.quotes | the FSCbears witness to the fact that carefully crafted multi-stakeholder- arrangements are far from being a guarantee toachieving the so-called win–win solutions. In fact, FSC'ssuccess with the big retailers is largely tied to its failure asan instrument to support sustainable small-scale producersin developing countries.
is.evaluation.quotes | No doubt, in general terms, the FSC is likewise groundedin norms of inclusiveness, participation and a balancedrepresentation of its various stakeholders and constituencies.Several mechanisms within the FSC governancestructure ensure that these ideals are translated into actualpractice: generally open membership to individuals andorganisations, participation in the General Assembly andparticipation in the national FSC initiatives (cf. Dingwerth2007, 161). Compared to other policy approaches on theglobal level, FSC's democratic claims are far-reaching(Gale and Haward 2004; Gale 2005; cf. Meidinger, thisissue).
