Abstract

Over the past ten years, the supply chains of multinational companies and retailers have become ever-more complex, with raw materials and other product inputs being sourced from producers in every corner of the globe. At the same time, concerns about climate change, natural resource scarcity, and labor practices have made sustainability and corporate responsibility the watchwords of the day for many firms. Voluntary standards and certification systems have emerged as a promising means for addressing sustainability and corporate responsibility in todays complex global marketplace.
