Forest Stewardship Council certification emerged nearly a decade ago, and its growth has been both applauded and criticized. To learn more about the impacts of certification, in 2002 we conducted a survey of FSC-certified forest management organizations in North America, fo- cusing on forest managers' goals for seeking certification, the land management impacts of certification, and the overall benefits and costs of certification. Results indicate FSC certification seems to be representing the interests of those who call for greater forest management ac- countability, but it addresses the interests of the forest managers themselves less well.
